Générations Futures is sending a letter today regarding Omnibus X to all Members of the European Parliament from the European People’s Party (EPP) group, accompanied by a detailed analysis note. This intervention follows the unwavering support and extremely tight schedule displayed by EPP rapporteur Herbert Dorfmann for the Omnibus X draft on May 5th in the European Parliament. The objective is to alert EPP MPs to the risk of rushing the parliamentary debate, which could have serious consequences for health and the environment, especially as the reform’s ability to actually achieve administrative simplification is being questioned.
Since its announcement by the European Commission in December 2025, the text has advanced at an unusual pace, with a schedule aiming for implementation by 2027. The Cypriot Presidency of the Council seeks to reach a compromise before the end of its term, while the EPP rapporteur, Mr. Dorfmann, has expressed his willingness to accelerate the file.
For Générations Futures, this artificial urgency is fundamentally incompatible with the scope of the proposed reforms, particularly the removal of time limits for the approval of active substances in pesticides and biocides. This measure would effectively make these approvals indefinite, thereby eliminating the periodic re-evaluations that currently ensure the integration of new scientific knowledge into risk assessments.
